Columbus police secure the area around East Dublin-Granville Road (Route 161) and Huntley Road on the city's North Side on Feb., 7, 2024, after a police sergeant struck by the driver of a stolen vehicle shot the driver from the hood of the car in a shopping center parking lot. The driver, Holly Graham, then drove through a grass ditch, dumping the sergeant, and fled eastbound in the westbound lanes of Route 161 before crashing into other vehicles at the Interstate 71 interchange.

The woman who was shot by a Columbus police sergeant from atop the hood of a stolen car she struck him with has died.

Holly Graham, 32, died at 2:11 p.m. Friday afternoon at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital, according to Jeremy Blake, Franklin County Coroner's Office spokeman, and Columbus police.

The unidentified sergeant shot Graham from atop the the hood on Feb. 7 after he was struck by the car during an unsuccessful traffic stop. The incident was prompted by a 911 call to report Graham was driving a stolen car from Lancaster in Fairfield County, according to police reports.

After being shot in a shopping center parking lot, Graham then drove through a grass ditch, throwing the sergeant off the car, and drove eastbound in the westbound lanes of Route 161 before crashing into other vehicles at the Interstate 71 interchange.

That's where Graham was taken into custody and transported by medics to Riverside Methodist hospital.

The sergeant, identified by the Columbus Division of Police only as a 10-year veteran, was transported to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, Downtown, for treatment of his injuries and was released on Feb. 9.

The Columbus Division of Police would not release the sergeant's name, continuing its policy of contending division officers hurt in such incidents are victims whose names do not have to be released under the state's Marsy's Law.

The Ohio Attorney General's Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting as it does all officer-involved shootings in Columbus.

Graham's death will not change BCI's handling of the investigation, Dominic Binkley, deputy press secretary for Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, told The Dispatch.

"As with all cases, we will gather the facts and examine the evidence, and refer the completed investigation to the local prosecutor, who will then decide whether or not to pursue charges" against the sergeant, Binkley said.
